Malachite on chrysocolla combines bright-green copper carbonate, Cu2(CO3)(OH)2, with hydrous copper silicate in blue-green hues. Malachite was named from the Greek malache, meaning mallow, for its color. Both minerals are secondary copper ores prized for ornamental specimens.
The Katanga Copper Crescent is a major mining area in Haut-Katanga, DR Congo, renowned for exceptionally rich sediment-hosted copper-cobalt deposits and abundant secondary copper minerals, especially malachite. Its mines have produced prized dioptase, cobaltian calcite, plancheite pseudomorphs, and outstanding baryte crystal clusters, with notable localities including Tantara, Shangulowé, and the historic Shinkolobwe district. The region’s vivid colors, distinctive mineral associations, and continuing potential for new discoveries make Katanga specimens enduring favorites among collectors.
