Ametista do Sul in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil is a municipality in the Serra Geral basalt province that is renowned among collectors as the world’s amethyst capital. The locality is especially known for amethyst geodes formed in basalt, with the region around it also producing agate and amethyst from amygdaloidal cavities in the Paraná basalts. Current amethyst mining is centered there, and the district remains an important source of world-class amethyst specimens for the mineral trade.
