Fluorite is a halide mineral of calcium fluoride, CaF2. It was named in 1797 by Carlo Antonio Galeani Napione from the Latin fluere, meaning “to flow,” for its use as a flux. Fluorspar, the commercial name for fluorite, is the main source of fluorine and helps make hydrofluoric acid.
