Often sold as “Green Onyx”, this is actually a Chalcedony. Most often dyed or enhanced for color.
Chalcedony is a fibrous microcrystalline variety of quartz with the chemical formula SiO2, mentioned by Agricola in 1546 as a stone named for the town of Chalcedon in modern Turkey. This translucent gemstone serves as the base material for many well-known varieties including agate, jasper, and onyx, which are prized for their intricate banding and colors.
