Technically, this piece falls just outside of the ‘thumbnail’ range. Rutile is an oxide mineral of titanium dioxide, TiO2. It was named in 1803 by Abraham Gottlob Werner from the Latin rutilus, meaning reddish, for its common color. It is the most common and stable natural form of titanium dioxide, and its synthetic form is used in optics and pigments.

Novo Horizonte in Bahia, Brazil is a locality in the state of Bahia that is associated with the broader mineral-rich belt of northeastern Brazil. The area is known to collectors for mineral occurrences in a region where pegmatite and other hard-rock deposits have produced attractive specimens, especially quartz and associated accessory minerals. Novo Horizonte remains relevant today because Bahia localities continue to be sought after for collectible Brazilian specimens with strong locality appeal.
