Pink amethyst is a marketing term for pale pink quartz, a silicon dioxide mineral colored by iron-related processes. Unlike traditional purple amethyst, its name reflects appearance rather than a formally recognized mineral variety.
Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, is renowned for its basalt-hosted amethyst geodes, especially those produced around Ametista do Sul in the Serra Geral Formation. These geodes formed through an early magmatic cavity stage followed by low-temperature mineral infilling, commonly yielding richly colored amethyst quartz and distinctive cathedral forms. The state also contains major coal deposits in the Paraná Basin and has produced agate, quartz varieties, and minor wolframite occurrences. Its abundant, geologically distinctive geodes and globally recognized amethyst production make Rio Grande do Sul an essential source region for mineral collectors.
