Fluorite is calcium fluoride, CaF2, a halide mineral prized for its vivid color zoning. It was first described by Carlo Antonio Galeani Napione in 1797, and its name comes from the Latin fluere, meaning “to flow.” It is the principal source of fluorine, widely used to make hydrofluoric acid.
Xianghualing Mine in Linwu County, Chenzhou, Hunan, China, is part of the Xianghualing Sn-polymetallic ore field, a skarn-type Sn-Pb-Zn deposit. The district is known for significant tin, lead, and zinc mineralization, with estimated metal endowment of about 134,000 tons of Sn and 178,000 tons of Pb-Zn, and it has produced collectible species including fluorite, cassiterite, magnetite, arsenopyrite, topaz, quartz, sphalerite, galena, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. It remains an important locality for fine Chinese mineral specimens, especially for skarn-associated crystals and mineral combinations sought by collectors today.
