Lepidolite is a lithium-bearing mica, a phyllosilicate with formula K(Li,Al)3(AlSi3O10)(O,OH,F)2. It was described by Johann August Friedrich Breithaupt in 1861, and its name comes from the Greek for “scale,” a nod to its platy mica form.
Araçuaí is a municipality in the northeast of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in the Jequitinhonha River valley, and its name is also used for the Araçuaí pegmatite district. The district is noted among collectors for producing pegmatite minerals such as spodumene and elbaite, placing it firmly within Brazil’s important gem and lithium-bearing pegmatite belt. Specimens from Araçuaí are valued today for their association with classic Minas Gerais pegmatites and the colorful tourmaline and spodumene material they have yielded.
