Pyrite is an iron sulfide mineral with the formula FeS2, prized for its metallic, brass-yellow color and golden resemblance. Known as “fool’s gold,” it is the most abundant sulfide mineral and an important source of sulfur dioxide for producing sulfuric acid. Some specimens contain microscopic gold, occasionally enough to mine as gold ore.
The Huanzala Mine lies in Huallanca District, Bolognesi Province, Ancash, Peru, and is a lead-zinc mine operated by Compañía Minera Santa Luisa. It is celebrated for excellent pyrite and fluorite specimens, including sharply formed pyrite cubes, octahedra, and occasional iron-cross twins. The mine has produced an exceptional volume of mineral specimens and remains a highly significant locality for collectors seeking classic Peruvian pyrite and fluorite.
