Minas Gerais, a large state in southeastern Brazil meaning "General Mines," is a world-renowned mining locality covering approximately 586,500 km² and famous for its diverse pegmatite minerals including tourmaline, beryl, and quartz from the northwest granitic region. This region is home to the Cruzeiro mine in São José da Safira, one of the most important gem and specimen mines globally, which has produced exceptional tourmaline and other minerals since the 1950s. Collectors today prize Minas Gerais specimens for their geological significance in the Eastern Brazilian pegmatite province and the historic quality of its tourmaline and beryl crystals. The state's legacy also includes the Brazilian Gold Rush areas like Ouro Preto, adding historical depth to its mineral wealth.
