Realgar is a striking red arsenic sulfide mineral with the composition As4S4. First described in the eighteenth century, its name derives from Arabic meaning “mine dust.” This light-sensitive mineral can transform into yellow pararealgar, so display specimens should be stored away from strong light.
Eureka, in Eureka County, Nevada, is a historic mining locality renowned for the Eureka quartzite, a compact, vitreous quartzite named for the town, and for the productive Eureka Mining District. Its replacement-style ore deposits are hosted in dolomite along major fault zones, with the Ruby Hill area among the district’s richest mineralized blocks and producing more than 500,000 tons of ore. The locality remains significant to collectors for specimens associated with Nevada’s classic mining history and distinctive Paleozoic geology.
