Locality: Xianghualing Mine, Xianghualing Sn-polymetallic ore field, Linwu Co., Chenzhou, Hunan, China

Very interesting surface facing on this corner of a Truncated Octahedral Fluorite from Xianghualing.

Fluorite is calcium fluoride, CaF2, a halide mineral also known commercially as fluorspar. First described in 1797 by Carlo Antonio Galeani Napione, its name comes from the Latin fluere, meaning “to flow,” a nod to its use as a flux. It is the principal source of fluorine and a familiar ingredient in hydrofluoric acid production.

Xianghualing Mine is part of the Xianghualing Sn-polymetallic ore field in Linwu County, Chenzhou, Hunan, China, where it sits in a district known for skarn-type tin-lead-zinc mineralization. The locality is noted for substantial metal endowment, with estimated resources of about 134,000 tons of tin and 178,000 tons of lead-zinc. For collectors, it is especially significant as a productive Chinese locality that has yielded a broad suite of minerals, including cassiterite, scheelite, natrolite, and hsianghualite.
