Peridot is the gem variety of olivine, a magnesium-iron silicate with formula Mg2SiO4. It was first recorded around 70 A.D., and its name is believed to come from Persian or Arabic words meaning “gem.” It is also August’s birthstone and is prized for its bright yellow-green color.
