Topaz is a fluorine-bearing aluminum silicate, Al2(SiO4)(F,OH)2. It was first described in 1737 by Johann F. Henckel, and its name comes from Topazios, the Greek name for an island in the Red Sea. Blue topaz is a familiar gemstone color used in jewelry. Sky Blue Topaz is almost always irradiated for color.
