Smoky quartz is a gray to brown to black variety of quartz, with the formula SiO2. It was first described in 1832 by the German mineralogist Johann Friedrich Ludwig Hausmann, and its name comes from the smoky color. Some smoky quartz is also made by irradiation treatment for the gem trade.
